I have a preoccupation with my back
swing and a converse lack of attention to keeping my eye on the ball, my
head down, following through and turning. I feel I need to forget about my
back swing and concentrate on all other aspects of my swing - even to the
point of looking at the FRONT of the ball (or so I imagined) which seemed
to help. Can anyone give me a pointer on how to spend less time worrying
about my back swing so I can concentrate on the rest of my swing? Thanks
if you can. |

"Hi, John: In response to your
preoccupation with your back swing....go get your best buddy,
wife, son, daughter, or anyone who can catch a ball, and have
them put on a baseball mitt, and you take a ball and throw the
ball to them and NOTICE WHAT HAPPENS. What are you aware of? Go
set a waste paper basket 3 feet away from you, crumple up an old
paper page by page and toss it into the basket, and
again....NOTICE WHAT HAPPENS AND WHERE YOUR AWARENESS IS!!! At
some point in time we need to trust that what we are
doing is safe and ok, and do what we do when we throw a ball, or
toss paper into a basket. If there is still learning to do with
certain parts of your swing, then do that away from a ball, and
do it as much as you can with full awareness. Even do a Tai Chi
golf swing, which is what I have my students do, and that is
perform a golf swing as sssllooooowwlllyyyy as possible (just
like performing Tai Chi). If you have any questions, I am
working for the summer in Quesnel, BC teaching and having
fun!!!!" - Kathy

"Seems you have a bunch of
falsehoods to get rid of. First of all, it is human instinct to
watch the ball if you want to strike it. You can't keep
your head down and follow through. You must respond to the
motion you produce with the club. I do agree you can get stuck
on your back swing. Make your back swing your awareness
and your thought on swinging the club forward in the direction
of the target TO THE FINISH. Don't worry about
the folks that say you looked up. People just don't do that as
the club moves much faster than your head ever could. The thing
I see most in that area in my teaching is the person is trying
to hit the ball and that is where the swing goes haywire. Be
aware of your back swing but put a good effort into making your
arms swing the club forward. The same idea as if you were
trying to hit a home run instead of a base hit. Hope this
helps." - Pat

"John you don't hit the ball
with the back swing, you hit it with the follow through. All the
back does is store energy. You need to think more about your
target and where you need to swing the club head and release
that stored energy too. Think about the where, not the
how. "

"John:
Work on your posture and your head
will not move vertically at all.
I want to see your belt
pointed at the ball on the same line as the shaft. You'll notice
when you in this athletic posture your arms are hanging from the
front of your shoulders.
To swing let your upper body move back
to shift weight onto the back foot and your lower body get to the
target. The ball is only the median point in the swing.
Don't worry the club will
hit it. It's not moving so don't worry about making sure you hit
it. Swing to the target.
Good Luck."
