From John, golfer:
I see balls advertised with the following cover materials: urethane elastomer, fusablend, inerGel, surlyn, ionomer, urethane, balata, polyurethane, zynthane II, titanium, zylin, elastomer, sodium zinc surlyn, metallocene enhanced surlyn, lithium surlyn, magnesium surlyn. Is there any source that gives some brief statements about the characteristics of all these materials?
PGA/LPGA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL RESPONSES:
Indiana
"John: Basically all of those golf ball covers combine durability and spin rate to give you maximum distance off the tee with playability (more feel) around the greens."
- Jeff Mathew, Teaching Professional
South Carolina
"John: None that I know of. It is all a game to sell that particular ball. What is the level of your play? You might wish to buy all of them and try them for the characteristics you desire if you have tour desires. Otherwise, play the ball that feels good at the time. Check me out at doctorgolf.homestead.com. Good golfing." - Michael Lucas, Teaching Professional
Texas
"I bet if you email the USGA at USGA.org they can give you lots of info about conforming golf balls."
- Dave Baron, Teaching Professional
Texas
"My friend: Go see your local PGA professional. He will have catalogs covering balls made of these materials, which go into detail about materials and playability factors."
- Bob Hasbrouck, Teaching Professional
