"Usually when the grain is
going away from you the grass is shinier and toward you it is
darker. You could check how the grass mats between and before
the hole as well. Usually you can see the direction the
grass is growing." - Pat

"Kyle: Some times you can just
look at the grass up close and see which way it is growing. If
you look at the green and the grass is kind of gray or shiny
then the blades are laying down away from you and you are
looking at the backs of them. If it appears darker or dull
looking then the grass is growing towards you, because you
are looking into the ends of the grass as they lay towards you.
Sometimes the grain will run towards mountains or bodies of
water. Grain will also follow the sun throughout the day. Those
are some things to keep in mind when checking the grain."

"Kyle: thank
you for the question. Certainly other professionals have answered
you, but here is my 2 cents. If bent grass is mowed properly, that
being cut to 5/32; there will be little grain so then you simply
need to read the slope of the green which will affect the break.
On Bermuda if you will look at the total slope of the green, the
grass will usually grow down the slope. However, if the green
slopes right to left but there is a large body of water to the
left the putt might turn back to the left because the grass is
trying to grow toward the water--hope this helps."
