From Jim Jones,

I'm square
to the target before I swing, but I've developed a slight push, with
just a hint of fade. It seems more prevalent on my short irons. My
drives are usually 5 yards off the fairway, and my birdie putts are
25-30 feet instead of 5-10 feet. I play to a 5 and would like to
take my game the next level. Is my push a result of
squaring my target line? My grip is relatively strong. My swing is a
little upright. Are there any minor adjustments I should make in my
pre-shot routine? I'd like to solve the problem without re-vamping my
entire swing. |

"Dear Jim: In your pre-shot routine step to the ball at a
right angle to your target line with your left foot pointing at
the ball (your shoulders and hips should be 45 degrees open at
this step). Next, set your stance parallel to the target line with
an athletic posture. Your shoulders will end up 18-20 degrees
open. Start your swing from your left shoulder. Good luck." -

"Jim: You have not told us all. My first
inclination from the report would be to check your ball location.
Try playing the ball from in front of your right cheek on all full
shots regardless if the stance is square, open or closed. If you
have had the misconception that ball placement varies with clubs
that is the problem. The center of the club head radius is the
right shoulder in your case and that is where the club head will
bottom out (or look at the target if alignment is correct) without
manipulation. The farther back in the stance the more open the
club head is at impact. Check tour player set ups from a dead on
setting and you will see what I am talking about. Good luck!"

"If you want to hit the ball
straight, set your club in the center of your stance and make
sure you are square to the target with your clubface and
parallel to that with your shoulders. If you still push it, you
are losing your center at the top of your back swing (stay over
the ball with center remaining the same. If you fade it a
little be more flexible with your arms on the forward swing. Be
sure to swing from the top to the finish in one motion,
uninterrupted. This should help you a bunch. It shouldn't be
difficult if you are a 5 handicapper, as you say. If you want to
fade or slice take the same stance, open the face and watch
where the ball goes. Then, when you take your stance with
the face open, make sure you set the club face in the direction
you want the ball to start (not end up). Make the same
swing. Hope this helps." - Patricia
