From Chad Portman, golfer:
I hit my driver 150-225 yards. I hit my 5-iron 175-220 yards and my PW 2 feet - 158 yards. I only swing 75mph which may be my problem? As for my other clubs, I can't even hit them! Help!

"Chad: Just based on the disparity of distances that you hit various clubs, you are swinging too hard. Each club is designed to hit the ball a prescribed distance. Think about "Iron Byron" for a second. Whatever you set it's club head speed at, will determine the overall carry distance of the golf ball. It really doesn't matter what your swing speed is as long as you hit the ball correctly. Distance will come later. As far as I'm concerned 75 MPH is fast enough as long as you swing 75 MPH with consistency. Remember, we can only swing the club as fast as we can swing it correctly. For further information on this subject see your local PGA Professional and show him/her this."

"Yes, your swing speed is too slow which explains your discrepancies in your distances."

"See http://www.ritson-sole.com/golftips/2002/feb2002.htm and learn to swing "within yourself'."

"Sounds like you are using your hands to provide power. With that much of a range of distance the clubface is coming through at varying amounts of loft. Hands just hold the club. Arms swing it and the body provides the power. Distance control is consistent because loft of the club is consistent.
Grip: Shake hands with the right hand on the bottom of the handle. The V should point somewhere between the right collar and shoulder. This is based on the size of your hands. Next insert the left thumb in the lifeline of the right hand and point the left V to the same point as the right V. Hold the club lightly. The club will come though with the proper amount of loft of the club."
