Joe Keefe: Feel Good About Your Game Joe Keefe makes people feel good about their games. "I enjoy the game tremendously," says Keefe, "I had success at it early, and I enjoyed the surroundings," he adds, explaining why he chose to pursue a career in golf. Having first picked up a club at age 10, Keefe spent the next 30 years or so developing his skills along with a deep appreciation for the game. A PGA teaching professional for over 20 years, Keefe simply loves helping people get better. "Having somebody ‘get it’ is the best," says Keefe, "Meaning, they elevate their game or maybe even just get it off the ground, but they’re clearly happy about it. I enjoy their happiness in improvement." Students taking lessons from Keefe can expect his undivided attention and a fun approach. "I like to keep things relaxed and uncomplicated," adds Keefe. His approach works and makes quite an impression, as he frequently gets letters from past students who thank him for his positive guidance and specific help to fix a problem. A former student, Neil Wood, keeps in touch with Keefe and often credits him for good shots he is able to make during a round. Keefe has worked with students at all different levels. When teaching beginners, he focuses on good fundamentals and practicing balance. Intermediate players are advised to understand their limitations, keeping good fundamentals and working on their short games. Keefe recommends advanced golfers stay positive and develop ways to play the course better. "Make smart decisions," adds Keefe. When practicing his own game, Keefe starts with the shorter shots and moves to the longer ones. "It’s not out of the question for me to take a 7 iron out on the range and hit a bucket with that club and make the ball do different things," says Keefe. A Ben Hogan fan and follower, Keefe also respects the careers of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. He calls himself one of "Lee’s Fleas," too, as he admired Trevino’s skills on the course. Keefe finds himself gaining more respect for Tiger Woods and his maturity as time goes by. These are all players who’ve influenced and continue to motivate Keefe, and he enjoys watching them play. When things get tough out on the course, and they sometimes do for Keefe when it comes to drawing a driver consistently and properly, Keefe simply tells himself to "Stick with it...don’t quit." Keefe’s positive attitude and obvious enjoyment of the game have seen him through many a competitive event in the South Florida and New England PGA Chapters and Sections. Keefe has also played in International 4 Ball. When he was 15, he golfed with his father in a two-day Labor Day event at his home club in Westfield, Massachusetts. On Sunday, he aced the par 3 12th hole which helped his foursome to an unusual 1-2-3-4 score for the hole. That was his first hole-in-one ever. The very next day, he aced the par 3 9th hole for his second hole-in-one. To date, Keefe has six aces. Keefe’s favorite shot is a 100-yard wedge, and his favorite course to play is South Shore Country Club in Hingham, Massachusetts where he is currently a PGA teaching professional. If someone invited him to fly to Scotland for a round or two, he’d surely say yes, as that is his favorite golf travel destination. A 7-year resident of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Keefe has been married to Sharon for 13 years, and they have three children: Ryan (9), Mary (6) and Julia (4). Keefe’s dog, Skipper, rounds out the family. You can learn more about Joe Keefe and how he can make you feel good about your game by visiting his web site at www.jkgolfpro.com. Thanks, Joe! |
