William Kipp: A Great Learning Experience Step up to the lesson tee with PGA Professional William Kipp and you’re in for a great learning experience. After 10 years of teaching, Kipp knows what it can mean to your game to get routine help from a professional, and he’s not about to let you go away empty-handed. "I like helping students truly understand the game and their individual golf swings and games," says Kipp, who gives his lessons at "one of the six most beautiful courses in America", Estes Park Golf Course in Colorado. "I want my students to experience lasting improvement," he adds. Whether the lessons are with him or a colleague, Kipp emphatically recommends beginners and intermediate level golfers get regular instruction from a professional. He’s worked with enough of them to know a common problem is consistency; what better way to combat that issue than to have someone show you the correct fundamentals and give you the proper base on which to build? Kipp’s students don’t mince words when it comes to what he’s done for their games. Many of them claim, "I understand the game so much better now in one hour than I ever have in X number of years of playing!" And sometimes, for Kipp, it’s not just about the skills of golf. Sure, he’s coached his fair share of advanced players into shaping shots and perfecting their scoring chances, but he’s also worked with students who are looking for something else out of the game. "I once helped a new player to enjoy and improve at golf enough to be able to get through a life's tragedy," says Kipp. "He now plays four to five times a week, and he seems to be smiling all the time!" Kipp not only improved this student’s level of play, he boosted his spirits and helped him get out and feel joy while teeing it up. All part of the great learning experience students can expect from lessons with Kipp. A talented player as well as an admirable teacher, Kipp first picked up a club at age 14 and played for his high school team in Lawrence, Kansas. He was once the Sunflower League Individual Champion and also played for Kansas University. Kipp’s amateur career included six Club Championships, two City Championships and a semi-finalist finish in the Kansas Amateur. After turning pro, Kipp competed on the Western States Tour and the Prairie Golf Tour. He’s participated in numerous events in the Colorado PGA Section and has also appeared in several Kansas Opens, Colorado Opens, Wyoming Opens and Rocky Mountain Opens. Kipp has earned numerous top-5 finishes as a professional. "I love the game and have had tournament success, " says Kipp. "I want to help others enjoy this game which has given me so much in life." Even as he shares his experience and knowledge with his students, Kipp continues to work on his own game and remains open to learning new things about the game he loves. His practice routine finds him working on full swings about 40% of the time; he splits the remaining time evenly between short game and putting. According to Kipp, the best part of his game is in the "scoring shots." He once hooked a 100-yard sand wedge around a tree on the final hole of a professional event to set up a win. "It was a done deal," smiles Kipp. Another shot Kipp loves to play involves his 5-iron and a tucked pin over a bunker. Even when things get dicey, Kipp maintains his confidence and keeps a sense of humor. During a rough round, Kipp will merely remind himself, "That’s why God gave me a lob wedge!" He might also turn to Chris Enders – a good friend and great player – for inspiration. Kipp wouldn’t pin his hopes on luck, however. With no superstitions about the game and firmly committed to controlling his own destiny, Kipp isn’t partial to any colors or special ball markers. He just grabs whatever’s in the top drawer and heads for his favorite course – his home course at Estes Park. Kipp also enjoys playing any course in Lawrence, Kansas. "If you've played there, you know why!" he says. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Kipp has lived in Estes Park, Colorado for 10 years. He shares his home with wife, Phyllis. When he’s not providing great learning experiences on the lesson tee, you might catch him engaging in some technical rock climbing or skiing through the back country.
