Christine Lovrine - Inner Competition Christine Lovrine, a golf professional for 24 years, plays other sports. She's been known to rap a softball up the middle or whack a racquetball around the court. But Lovrine chose to focus on golf for her career because she appreciates the "inner competition" this sport brings. "It's just you and the golf course," says Lovrine, "Ultimately, you have no one to blame but yourself for mistakes." With this in mind, Lovrine has
only one word of advice for her beginner, intermediate and advanced
players: practice. Students can expect a relaxed atmosphere and a fun
lesson from Lovrine, but she does impress upon them that it takes a
thorough understanding of the basics and a lot of practice to
improve. Lovrine practices her own game by hitting balls on the range. Most people would grab a bucket and start swinging, but Lovrine likes the added challenge of playing mind and skill games using different clubs in her bag. At least once a week you'll find her out on the range, making shots based on her pre-determined mental course. "My favorite shots to hit are cut shots," says Lovrine. The fade is hardest to hit for Lovrine, but she can play it if she really concentrates. Lovrine is most confident when she has her putter in hand. "That's the best part of my game," she adds. While Juli Inkster and Freddie Couples are players Lovrine enjoys watching, she turns to herself for motivation when it comes to working on her own game. After an errant shot, Lovrine simply tells herself to relax and move on. You'll snap out of it, she tells herself. "It's only a game," says Lovrine, "I try to remind people of this and tell them not to be too hard on themselves." Lovrine enjoys teaching golf because she is among people who love the game as much as she does. She is rewarded by the smiles of her students as they meet and revel in their own "inner competition." Recently, Lovrine helped a junior golfer achieve success, working with her for two years on fine-tuning her natural abilities. This student made her high school team and was voted MVP three years in a row. Born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin,
Lovrine graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point and
participated in numerous Wisconsin Women's Amateur tournaments. She was
once the Milwaukee County champion. Lovrine now resides in Fishers,
Indiana with her 9-year old cocker spaniel, Brassie; she gives her golf
lessons at Britton Golf Course. Her favorite course to play is the
Magnolia at Disney World, but you won't see her using golf balls bearing
the number 3 or 8. She wears no particular colors on the course, but you
can rest assured she's secretly savoring the "inner
competition" each new round brings. Thanks for sharing, Christine!
