Winn Moore:
A Simple Approach to Teaching and Playing

"I use common sense," says Winn Moore. That’s why his students enjoy taking lessons
from him, and undoubtedly, that’s how he has helped so many improve. "I try to communicate on the same level, and I like to see people get excited about performing better," adds Moore, who has been teaching golf for 18 years. He started playing golf when he was seven. Moore has played other sports – for instance, baseball – but he focused on golf because the game intrigued him.

Participating on the golf teams at Liberty Jr. High and Colonial High School, Moore
continued to improve his game. In recent years, he’s played in the Michigan Open twice
and in Michigan Section Match Play five times. Moore was the 1979 Florida State Publinx Champion, and he played on Florida mini tours in 1982-83 and again in 1985-86. In all the rounds he’s played, he highlights two shots as being among his best ever. "One was an
eight iron and the other was a driver off the ground," recalls Moore. "Both shots went in
the hole for double eagle. It was the same hole in back to back years."

As a teaching professional, Moore’s advice to players at any level is "practice, practice
and practice." Moore works on his own game by hitting at least a bag of balls a day with a mid-iron, focusing on his alignment. Challenging shots for Moore are any that have to fade, while his favorite shots to make are long putts.

Choosing a course to play isn’t difficult for Moore, as he enjoys all types of golf courses. Moore appreciates most those courses that allow golfers to view a bit of nature while playing the round. He’s found such courses in and around his favorite golf destination, Northern Michigan. You’ll catch him playing there most likely dressed in light colors, especially if the temperature is up.

If things aren’t going well during a round, Moore looks for things to learn from the day and reminds himself, too, that golf can be a humbling game. His motivation comes from within and his admiration for other golfers stems from something other than talent or skill. "I like
to watch any one play who is enjoying their game," says Moore.

A graduate of Ferris State University, Moore has been working with a student who is now in the PGM program there. "When I started with him, he was 15 and could not make his high school team," says Moore. "We worked on his swing a lot in the beginning to get him striking the ball better. Most of the work we’ve done in the last year or so has been confidence-building and course management skills."

Born in Lapeer, Michigan, Moore now resides in Pleasant Lake, Michigan with his wife of five years, Colleen. They have two pets: Hershey the lab and TK the cat. Moore enjoys hunting and fishing when he’s not out teaching or playing golf. His advice to golfers looking for a good lesson? "Seek a teacher you can trust, and don’t be afraid to go outside the norm to find methods of improvement." Thanks for sharing, Winn!
