Charlie Richardson: Helping People Learn

After 15 years as a golf professional, Charlie Richardson is one busy teacher. He rarely has time to practice his own game, but you can bet he’ll take the time to help another person learn to golf. “I like helping people learn the game,” says Richardson, who first played golf when he was just six years old. “Most people have goals they want to achieve. I try to help them get there.”

Because he was “too small for football,” Richardson played golf for his team at Grissom High School in Meridianville, Alabama. Later, he competed in professional events, including the Dixie PGA Section Championship and the Alabama Chapter Championship. Now a full time instructor at the Richland Golf Center, Richardson dedicates his days to improving and fine-tuning the games of others.

“When students first come to me they usually ask if I’m patient,” says Richardson. “They find out soon enough that I am, and that I really pay attention to each individual,” he adds. Richardson provides specific instruction based on each golfer’s needs, some times recommending that students hit just their irons to perform certain drills. “I do not teach each person the same,” says Richardson. “Everyone has different needs.”

According to Richardson, the best part of his game involves short irons. Not surprisingly, his favorite shots to make are two-foot birdie putts. Richardson once made a 10-foot putt for par to shoot his target score and pass his Player’s Ability Test. He enjoys playing his home course most, but he’d travel to Vegas for a round given the opportunity. “I’ve never played there,” says Richardson. Favoring no particular colors for golf, it’s likely Richardson would simply don whatever was clean and head out to the first tee.

Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman and Cathy Baker are players Richardson likes to follow, and he has been motivated and inspired by their successes. A resident of Meridianville for over 30 years, Richardson shares his home with wife Melissa and two children, Clint (7) and Daniel (3). When he’s not on the range helping someone improve, you’ll probably find him playing a game with his kids. Which sport? “Whatever they want to do,” smile Richardson.
