Ben Witter: Don't Settle for Mediocrity
Ben Witter plays a lot of sports. Racquetball, basketball, tennis, baseball – and, oh yeah, golf. The thing about golf is, Witter excels at it. And he simply enjoys playing it more than any other sport. "What I like most about giving golf lessons is sharing the enjoyment you can get out of this great game," says Witter, who’s been teaching golf since 1986 and swinging a club since he was 3 or 4 years old. Witter’s students are guaranteed three things in any given lesson: 1.) they’ll have fun; 2.) they’ll get things to work on pertaining to their game; 3.) they’ll get interesting memories.

Witter teaches all levels of students, recommending that beginners concentrate on the fundamentals and do them right. Intermediate and advanced players should always raise the bar. "Don’t settle for mediocrity," advises Witter, who approaches just about everything he does with enthusiasm and a drive for excellence. Take the golf marathon he participated in, for instance. It was a charity event to benefit cancer research. "Throughout the course of an 18-hour day," says Witter, "I played 17 ½ rounds of golf during which time I made 116 birdies and shot 92 under par for the day. Talk about being in the groove – I don’t think I’ve ever been that loose before or since!"

Due to his full schedule of lessons, Witter doesn’t get to practice as often as he’s like, but when he does, he tries to put himself in realistic situations and concentrate on the feeling he would have if he were trying to make shots in a tournament situation. Having played on several mini tours from 1986 to 1991, Witter knows what it’s like to play competitive golf. He made a 6-footer to win the Philadelphia Sectional Assistant’s Championship, which was one of the hardest shots Witter says he’s faced. Equally good with the driver, Witter was a two-time finalist in the Remax World Long Drive Championships.

Perhaps that’s why most of his students come to him for assistance with increasing distance. Witter is happy to help, and he does so using understandable terms despite the sometimes complex subject matter. "My students appreciate my ability to communicate difficult material in easy to understand words," says Witter. "When I am able to share something I know with someone and they’re able to apply it to their personal situation, I consider that a success."

Witter’s favorite course to play is "any course" - no surprise coming from a guy who just loves the game. He wouldn’t mind traveling to Palm Springs now and then to play a few rounds, as long as he could make a lot of shots "pertaining to ball flight laws," because those are his favorites. When it comes to influential golfers, Witter is motivated by and enjoys watching Tiger Woods play.

Currently a PGA teaching professional at Iron Valley Golf Club, Witter grew up in Myerstown, Pennsylvania and graduated from Eastern Lebanon County High School. He played golf for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He still lives in Myerstown, now with his wife of 14 years, Ann, and his four daughters: Samantha Ann (10), Alexandra Jane (8), Margaret Mary (7) and Gabrielle Elizabeth (5). Witter also has a dog named Chloe and numerous cats.

"It’s pretty simple, really," says Witter if he ever runs into a difficult time out on the course. "It’s all about perspective. When compared to truly tough situations in life, like being diagnosed with cancer or something like that, a tough situation on the golf course pales in comparison."
